Initial Intake & Assessment

Parents/caregivers are invited to share their child’s developmental history and any worries they have about their child. Significant life events for the family are also explored through a collaborative discussion that reflects parents/caregivers’ insight and experience. Information like confidentiality and practical considerations about the play/arts therapy process will also be discussed.

We have a collaborative approach, so our assessment includes therapists reviewing child reports, contacting relevant professionals and caregivers, and developing therapeutic goals together.

Please note: In some instances additional time may be needed to best understand you and your family, and additional Intake sessions may be proposed.

Play Therapy/Arts Therapy Sessions

The play/arts therapy session is with your child for 45 minutes (generally alone for Child-Centred Play Therapy; or with caregiver for Interplay Family Therapy). For some younger children, 30 minutes may be more appropriate depending on their needs.

Subsequent Scheduled Parent Consultations

Parent consultations are offered separate to play/arts therapy sessions as parents/carergivers play an important role in their child’s healing process. The consultations take place every 4-6 sessions and provide an opportunity for parents/caregivers to give feedback regarding developmental progress and emotional/behavioural change. Parents/caregivers also gain an understanding of their child’s experiences so they ensure their child’s needs can be met at home, school or access visits.

Filial Therapy

Parents/caregivers learn core play therapy skills and techniques over approximately 10-12 weeks. Parents/caregivers are then supported and supervised by the therapist to conduct special play time sessions at home once a week for 30 minutes. These special play time sessions enhance the parent-child relationship.

Available in person and/or online.
